Despite it falling just short of making our most anticipated 2020 animated films list, The Willoughbys had our interest thanks to its affiliation with streaming giants Netflix. Thanks in part to them we got the masterful Klaus last year so, any new animated films with their involvement deserve some attention. So, does Netflix have another gem on their hands? Here are the critics' views: THE GAURDIAN 'While The Willoughbys might not boast the slick structure or beating heart of a Pixar animation, there’s enough offbeat charm to make it an easily digestible watch and for any concerned parents, the practice of “orphaning” involves so much work, your kids will likely be scared off' For the full review please visit here. COMICBOOK 'The Willoughbys is one-of-a-kind. It chooses to color outside the lines and zig when more traditional projects are told to zag. It's not the funniest family film you've ever seen, nor is it the saddest or most profound, but it is honest, caring, and delightfully dark from start to finish, a refreshing adventure at a time when it's most desperately needed.' VARIETY 'The movie may feature two parents who scarcely deserve saving, but it’s responsible about the way it presents this idea (your kiddos won’t be putting snakes in your bed or Drano in your coffee after seeing it). At a moment when most locked-in American families are pretty near the limit of how much they can stand of one another, “The Willoughbys” wraps things up beautifully with a song, in which Jane embraces her oddball clan with a wonderful sentiment: “I choose you.”' For the full review please visit here.
THE LA TIMES 'There are some appealing vocal performances. Short is comically debauched as the dad. Crews is cuddly as the Captain Crunch/Willy Wonka figure (he should do more animated work; he has the big voice and energy for it). Rudolph is good in everything and owns one of the movie’s more charming moments, though a throwaway, when she and Jane start scatting together. But despite the overwrought physical comedy and cartoony character design that shares DNA with “Hotel Transylvania,” it’s hard to tell whom the intended audience is — especially with references to “Deliverance” and tardigrades.' SCREEN RANT 'The Willoughbys isn't just for families with children, it's for families of all kinds, particularly chosen families who will see themselves represented on screen. Certainly, Netflix original movies can be a bit of a mixed bag, but with only two under its belt, the streamer's animated offerings are proving to be equally fun and heartfelt. Netflix users of any age won't go wrong by checking out The Willoughbys while stuck at home.' For the full review please visit here. DAVE LEE DOWN UNDER (VIDEO REVIEW) Summarizing, it seems that The Willoughbys didn't quite reach the dizzy heights of the spectacular Klaus, but is a good movie in its own right for the whole family keeping Netflix's new foray into original animated films on a good path. The film launches tomorrow on the streaming service, and I can't wait to check it out for myself. -YOU MAY ALSO BE INTERESTED IN
