Ok...honest time...I absolutely hated the previous 2 Troll movies. I believed that despite skewing to the younger audience with a peppering of popular music here and there, I never held back my punches in my own critical analysis. But get this... major film critics agrees with me (a rarity...trust me) as they bestowed low scores after low scores on Rotten Tomatoes. But clearly...these films have an audience that keeps buying tickets as somehow we arrive at a 3rd film. Is it third time the charm? Here's Troll Band Together Review Roundup: Continue below for written version. THE GAURDIAN (CATH CLARKE) 'The plot makes not one bit of sense and is patently an excuse for a barrage of boyband gags, some a lot less funny than others. But the film is gloriously odd in its own candyfloss-coloured trippy way." Read the full review here THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER (FRANK SCHECK) 'Capitalizing on the fact that one of the film’s main voice stars, Justin Timberlake, was formerly a member of one of the biggest boy bands in pop history, Trolls Band Together is stuffed with so many groan-worthy punning jokes and one-liners referencing such bands from the ‘90s and other eras that you wonder whether the film was made for its target tyke audience or their parents. Many of the latter will at least enjoy the pop culture nostalgia while enduring the perfunctory storyline." Read the full review here THE GLOBE & MAIL (RADHEYAN SIMONPILLAI) 'If the music is less than, the animation in Trolls Band Together is as fun, inventive and gorgeous as ever, with environments that appear to be put together from the toys and objects found in a kindergarten or a craft table. Staying true to the boy band spirit, Trolls Band Together looks a lot better than it sounds.' Read the full review here
VARIETY (PETER DEBRUGE) 'As with Illumination’s “Sing” sequel, the series has gone from being a music-driven kiddie confidence booster to a sales pitch for the ultra-processed mainstream music industry. Here, the soundtrack consists of mash-up “oldie” medleys, including a high-energy sequence that connects New Edition’s “Candy Girl” with “You Got It (The Right Stuff)” by New Kids on the Block. The vocals have all been Auto-Tuned to extreme, but at least we’re not dealing with those irritating Alvin and the Chipmunks falsettos.' But outside of the gorgeously textured animation and a real sense of experimentation in the design, it all feels stale and safe. This is a film that wants to refer to Justin Timberlake’s boyband past without giving the other members of NSync starring roles.' Read the full review here MAMA'S GEEKY (VIDEO REVIEW) In the end, the film amassed a rather disappointing score of 63% from 35 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. So another poor critical score but this film (like the previous ones) was so well marketed that I am quite sure it will sell like gangbusters. I guess I just have to accept these films are just not my type and hey...at least the animation is colourful and pretty. Here's hoping Trolls 4 brings it all together. -YOU MAY ALSO BE INTERESTED IN
