The Boondocks is one of my favourite shows of all time, so as a result, tears filled my eyes when I read reports that season 5 was officially in production. The pot got sweeter from there as further reports revealed that series creator Aaron McGruder was back involved and I was officially in dreamland. Unfortunately, my stay there would be short as the newest reports about the project today revealed that both season 5 & 6 would be exclusive to HBO MAX, another streaming platform here for our hard earn money.
HBO Max is a new streaming platform from WarnerMedia that is set to launch in Spring of next year. For now, the monthly subscription fee, along with an international release date is unannounced. To its credit, HBO Max will be the new home for many beloved series such as The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Friends, Game of Thrones as well as, all 55 previous episodes of The Boondocks. All shows I love to death, but I am finding it difficult to even fathom where the money will come from for yet another streaming service to go along with my Netflix & Amazon Prime Videos subscriptions (also seriously considering to spring for Disney+).
Where will it end?!!
"The Boondocks was a revolutionary series that sparked conversations on hot button issues and brought dark subjects into the light with episodes like 'The Trial of Robert Kelly,' 'The Fundraiser' and 'The Story of Gangstalicious,'" said Kevin Reilly, chief content officer for HBO Max and president of TBS, TNT and TruTV. "Aaron is a gifted visionary whose unique style of storytelling is a welcome voice, and we are elated the Freemans are making their thugnificent comeback on HBO Max."
As for the new season, it will follow Robert "Granddad" Freeman and his two grandsons, Huey and Riley, as they move to an idyllic suburban community in Maryland — only to see it taken over by the tyrannical Uncle Ruckus and his bizarre neofascist regime according to a report from hollywoodreporter.com.
"There’s a unique opportunity to revisit the world of The Boondocks and do it over again for today," said McGruder. "It’s crazy how different the times we live in are now — both politically and culturally — more than a decade past the original series and two decades past the original newspaper comic. There’s a lot to say and it should be fun.” I love me some Boondocks but I am praying the new seasons eventually comes to Adult Swim.
