Listen, I always preferred 'the completely new' over 'the remake/reboot', especially in an era where the majority of our viewed content (TV, Movies, games) are regurgitated and fed back to us in some form. Disney has been the biggest culprits of this recently as they continue to scrape the bottom of the barrel of their animated library to transform them into live-action money-making machines (So far this year we got an Aladdin, Lion King and Dumbo live-action movie). But goddammit! They got me too! Thanks to the recent news that one of my most beloved cartoon series, The Proud Family is coming back!
Oscar Proud himself, Tommy Davidson (The voice of Oscar), recently stated that the show was coming back, and it would be on “one of Disney’s streaming services". This service is most likely Disney+, a streaming service that offers ad-free programming with a variety of original feature-length films, documentaries, live-action and animated series and short-form content.
Disney is aiming to give access to their entire back catlog with the launch of Disney+
The Proud Family's initial run was for 52 episodes over a span of 4 years. Long after it's time on Disney came to an end, you can sometimes catch reruns over on TVJ's evening kids block. It will also be interesting to see if Disney's first black all family sitcom tackles any of the current sensitive socio-cultural and political topics, especially on race, that is is front and center in America today.
This episode called 'Culture Shock' tackled the topic of racial & cultural tolerance at a time when Islamic Americans became under the microscope few years after 9/11 .
However, before our excitement leaves this stratosphere, I must mention that an official confirmation of the shows return was not given by Disney themselves. Also, as of this writing, it remains unclear whether the entire original cast would be returning for the reported reboot. Nonetheless, I have faith that this reboot will be done properly and further leaning towards subscribing to Disney+ when it becomes available in Jamaica.
