With the release of a new game and two films over the past year, massive fans of our friendly neighbourhood spider must be had been in heaven. Then we got a PS5 showcase in the Summer, and the loving can start anew once again as the latest adventure in the Marvel Spider-Man universe comes to the PS5 this fall. This time, teenager Miles Morales is adjusting to his new home while following in the footsteps of his mentor, Peter Parker, as a new Spider-Man. But, should we join him on this journey? Or are we better off finding another game to show off our PS5s? Here's the roundup: IGN (SCORE 9/10) 'Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales may not be quite as packed with content as the original, but it stands out as an essential story in Insomniac’s Spidey Universe. It earns its spot as a fantastic follow-up, telling a wonderful Miles-specific story while improving upon the fundamentals of the first game with distinctive moves and enemies. And it’s an excellent way to break in your new PlayStation 5; it looks spectacular, loads fast, and makes fun use of the DualSense controller, the directional audio, and more. But regardless of which generation you play it on, it’s a worthy followup to one of the best superhero games ever made.' For the full review please visit here. GAMEINFORMER (SCORE 9/10) 'No load times. Beautiful raytracing. The PlayStation 5 version of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a technical juggernaut that continually impresses. It is the ideal way to play the game if you can. Feeling the Venom flow through the controller is quite cool. That’s not to say the PlayStation 4 version is far behind, however. Marvel’s Spider-Man from 2018 remains one of the generation’s best-looking and playing games, and this game’s performance is in lockstep with it. Fast travel and restarts bring up short subway rides and loading screens (they are instant on PS5), and the visuals may not have that next-gen sheen, but the PS4 version is still a beautiful and worthy way to experience this excellent game.' The game wastes little time jumping you into Miles' story and rarely lets up on the brakes, packing the young wall crawler's first solo outing with more super powers and radio chatter than the game needs. And yet, despite its frantic pace, Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a compelling open-world action game that helps highlight why Miles is so special: his culture. It's Miles' unique differences and earnest attempts at figuring out how to protect his community that make him into such a wonderful hero, not the mask he wears and superpowers he wields.' DESTRUCTOID (SCORE 9/10) 'I felt compelled to answer a still-burning question for some: so what exactly is this game? I know it's been confusing. So the answer really is: "it's something like Uncharted: Lost Legacy." It's a shorter, roughly 10-hour (or less) campaign that can be stretched to 15 hours or so if you go for a 100% rating. Once that's in the bag, you can opt for a New Game+ run, which has its own unlocks in tow. While you might want more, the benefit of this approach is that the game doesn't feel bloated nor does it overstay its welcome. The in-game challenges and collectibles never get out of hand, and there's only two easy-to-follow currencies to juggle. I actually 100%ed it with gusto for this review because I was compelled to.' Even if you were expecting a small 'full' game, this is smaller. It plays like great DLC, because it is great and also clearly DLC, rather than a stand-alone expansion. Things like Left Behind and Lost Legacy worked because they were linear and gave the developer precise control over the pace and punch of a single story lasting a few hours. Here you've got a great story but one that takes place in a huge open world with little else overly meaningful to fill it. The story, characters, and action are all enjoyable, but if you unboxed your shiny new PS5 on Friday night and settled in to play this over the weekend, you'd likely reach the 'hoovering up collectibles because it's all that's left' stage before Monday came around.' In contrast, Spider-Man on the PS4 amassed a score of 87 so, it's safe to say that Miles' adventure is at comparable quality to that of Peter's. Either way, it seems to be an excellent way to kick off the PS5 era. -YOU MAY ALSO BE INTERESTED IN:
