I had already professed my undying excitement for the upcoming CG animated reboot of Scooby-Doo here on this blog. Heck, it even made the shortlist for our most anticipated animated films for this year. But, after months of uncertainty over its theatrical release brought on from the current pandemic, the time has finally come for this latest reboot to make its debut. Does it do the franchise justice? Here are some of the industries' top critics take on the movie: SCREEN RANT 'Scoob! is entirely missable for fans of Scooby-Doo, even with the lower barrier of entry due to the film releasing straight to streaming. Because of this, Scoob! may be worth the price for families in need of entertaining their young children while staying at home. With a brisk 90-minute runtime and plenty of bright colors and loud, recognizable songs, Scoob! has the right elements to keep kids entertained. Still, those looking for classic Scooby-Doo or anything more than superficial entertainment can skip Scoob! - even with the dearth of new movies.' For the full review please visit here. THE WRAP 'There’s some of mask-ripping here, too, because of course there is. If there’s something you remember, or liked, about any iteration of “Scooby-Doo,” you’ll probably find it, or a joke about it, in “Scoob!” It gets to be a little tiring, but maybe it helps all this frantic silliness go down just a little easier, too.' VARIETY 'Suffice to say, Dastardly’s plan involves unleashing Cerberus, the mythological three-headed dog who guards the underworld, although by the time that has happened, the movie has already overstayed its welcome by a good half-hour. Then again, these are trying times, and parents may be grateful to have a virtual babysitter to distract their kids for 90 minutes, in which case, “Scoob!” is surely more effective than sitting them in front of the fish tank.' THE GUARDIAN 'At one point in Scoob, Fred insists that this is their “most important mystery ever” rather than being “about some guy in a rubber mask”, an annoyingly smug attempt to elevate this above the many entertainingly dopey adventures we’ve seen them on before. But the bigger Scoob goes, the more anonymous it feels, a lacklustre example of what happens when Hollywood execs pander, meddling with a classic that should have been treated with more respect.' IGN 'The earnest and entertaining Scoob! is a perfectly fine distraction for kids and parents stuck at home, with enough cute and amusing elements throughout to keep viewers engaged. The movie gets a lot of heartfelt mileage out of its exploration of the relationship between man and his four-legged best friend, even if its messaging is simplistic and superficial. Scoob! also serves as a springboard for a possible Hanna-Barbera shared movie universe with its inclusion of a number of iconic characters and elements from the famed animation company’s classic cartoons.' Looking at the reviews here, as well as the film's overall score of 50% on Rotten Tomatoes, it seems this Scooby-Doo relaunch, was a critical failure. I was hoping for so much more as I was really impressed with the series' new 3D animated look as well as an overall plot that incorporates a shared Hanna-Barbera cinematic universe. Luckily, Scoob! is available on Video on Demand starting today so I get the change to form my opinion rather quickly. -YOU MAY ALSO BE INTERESTED IN
