The Addams Family had always been one of those classic shows for the life of me I could never get into. My Parents loved the old black and white TV show from the 60s and despite the many remakes/reboots TV shows and movies, I just never gravitated towards it. Fast-forwarding to 2019 and The Addams Family is once again revived, this time in the form of a Computer Generated Animated movie. I will have to wait for the film's release here in Jamaica to see if this new version is for me but, while I wait the critics have had their say. Here's the review roundup:
ROGER EBERT (2/4 STARS)
"The voice talent does their best with the dialogue, but cannot make it snap like Paul Rudnick's wonderfully witty quips in "Addams Family Values." The artwork for the characters and setting is fun, though never takes advantage of the possibilities of animation when staging the gestures, expressions, or action sequences. Children will enjoy the upside-down world—where dusting the house means making it dustier, and an invitation to the mall is heard as an invitation to a maul—but even children will understand that the theme of encouraging individual expression would be more compelling if the storyline wasn't so resolutely dull." There's humor for kids and adults alike, ranging from silly, cartoonish gags to some of the black comedy longtime Addams Family fans expect of the property. As such, the new animated movie is a decent watch for fans of the franchise, especially families whose children are excited to see the new adventure. Though The Addams Family isn't so good it demands to be seen in a theater, it's a solid enough choice for a day out with the family before the (better) more family-friendly titles release next month when the holiday season kicks off." IGN (8.0/10) "Frighteningly funny and fresh, this hilarious animated treat will introduce a whole new generation to the loving and strange family whilst also pleasing those who grew up with the iconic '90s movies. With a sweet story, tight runtime, and impressive animation, this is the perfect Halloween treat for film fans young and old!" To read the full review please click here.
THE VERGE
"To be fair, The Addams Family isn’t necessarily worse than a lot of the generic animated kids’ fare that hits theaters these days. It just feels like a bigger disappointment than, say, The Secret Life of Pets 2, because other creators have done so much more with these characters. Though the film pulls its aesthetics from the original cartoons, The Addams Family is clearly a strategic attempt to reach a generation who were raised on the 1990s Sonnenfeld films, and now have kids of their own. But like Disney’s live-action remakes of its animated classics, which target the same nostalgic audience, The Addams Family just serves as an argument for revisiting the originals instead." THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER "Instead of having fun with what a rebellious adolescence means in a household that's all about nonconformity, Lieberman quickly returns to a story as predictable as all those identical houses Needler is hawking. Fortunately, the conflict between townsfolk and our heroes plays out quickly, and should take even less time to forget." To read the full review please click here.
Currently, the film has a woeful score of 40% from a total of 49 reviews over at rotten tomatoes. I do want to see for myself if this film finally breaks my Addams Family ho-do but, with promising animated films like Spies in Disguise and Frozen 2 just around the corner, it will have to wait.
The Addams Family Movie is out today at both Jamaican and American cinemas.
