We first made mention of this game with our post about this year's Evolution competition, stating that it was a definitely a looker 'with its anime aesthetics and beautifully animated over the top flashy moves'. Grandblue Fantasy Versus is much more than a pretty face as it also contains all the features you will need in a Triple-A fighting game, including a surprise side-scrolling, beat-'em-up, action RPG story mode. But does it all come together into one fun, beautiful package? Here's the critic review roundup: DESTRUCTOID (SCORE 7.5/10) "Granblue Fantasy: Versus might not fulfill your dreams of providing a deep RPG and fighter in one, but given that the bulk of the game is focused on what Arc knows best, it's easier to overlook that sin. Hardcore players might scoff at the lower ceiling compared to other fighters, but there's a lot of potential here, and the meta will only continue to evolve." For the full review please visit here. GAMESPOT (SCORE 7/10) "Granblue Fantasy Versus presents a set of systems that are distinct and unique without putting up unnecessary hurdles for those that are just here to get a Granblue fix. Arc System Works has cleverly meshed RPG and fighting game mechanics, and the way that manifests in the core one-on-one battles is really exciting. In other respects, namely the campaign story mode and its gacha stylings, it leaves a lot to be desired. In bringing Granblue to the wider world, Arc System Works hasn't put its best foot forward, but Versus is definitely a game where you can come for the fantasy and stay for the fighting." IGN (SCORE 8/10) "Following in the footsteps of BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle, Granblue Fantasy: Versus is one of Arc System Works’ most approachable fighting games yet. It smartly balances considerations for more casual fighting game players without ever stepping on the toes of its hardcore audience. The result is a more grounded and neutral-heavy ArcSys alternative with all of the usual ArcSys flair, which is a fantastic breath of fresh air. Its RPG mode is dull, and its 11 character roster feels way too light, but all things considered, Granblue Fantasy: Versus feels like it could be the start of another special 2D fighting franchise." Even though I have no patience for the story mode, I can’t deny the merit of its inclusion. For anyone wanting more out of these characters, there’s almost nothing better. I’d rather be sharpening my skills and busting my thumbs than diving into back stories and prime motivations. The accessible move sets, the gorgeous character designs, and the distant skill ceiling mean that I’ll be absorbed in this task for quite a while yet. If you’re fishing for an anime fighter that will keep you at your seat’s edge, look no further than Granblue Fantasy: Versus." For the full review please visit here. KOTAKU (SCORE N/A) "Granblue Fantasy Versus is a fantastic new fighting game that more than justifies its existence in an already overcrowded genre. The way it encourages players to learn more about its mechanics, both with a decent tutorial mode and iterative techniques, surprised me. RPG Mode is lackluster, but Versus more than makes up for that with its core gameplay. That said, I’m discouraged by the way Arc System Works continues to stubbornly ignore technology that would make the online multiplayer in their fighting games better for the vast majority of players." For the full review please visit here. Overall, Grandblue Fantasy Versus currently sits at a Metascore of 78 from 13 reviews (PS4) suggesting that the game is good but not great. However, if you dig into most of these reviews a little further, you will notice that the scores are taking a hit for the less than stellar RPG mode and outdated online multiplayer. Luckily, the core gameplay looks like it's oodles of fun. I can't wait for the fighting game community to further develop the meta. -YOU MAY ALSO BE INTERESTED IN:
