Another year, another season, another numbered FIFA game is on the horizon. But Wait! This one...there is something special about this one. EA Sport's FIFA series has been an etched stable in gaming footy fans' library since 1993, but now this year's FIFA 23 will be the last game released under the familiar moniker. But, before it becomes EA Sports FC, FIFA has one more go at the top prize. Does it take it home? Or bitterly loses out in the penalty shoot-out? Here's the review roundup: VGC (SCORE N/A) 'Fans of the series already know they’re going to be getting it, and newcomers will find a typically enormous game with more modes, leagues and teams than they could ever know what to do with. On its own merits, it’s another hugely accomplished sports game by EA’s Vancouver studio, which clearly has this down to a fine art now.But we still can’t shake that nagging feeling that next year’s game – the first edition of EA Sports FC – may be the one EA is saving its big guns for.' One is the age-old FUT issue of pack transparency: the odds of unearthing Mbappe, Son, or Benzema (top dog on the FIFA 23 ratings list) are still deliberately obfuscated. Those pay-to-win catcalls are going nowhere. Additionally, there remain too many moments of manufactured drama, in which player control feels sabotaged. Be it Squad Battles where trailing teams turn into 1970 Brazil, online matches where the leading team suddenly can't pass water, or an overabundance of 90th minute goals – not least that Werner sickener. Still, FIFA 23 sees the series bow out on a high, and provides encouraging signs for the debut of EA Sports FC this time next year.' For the full review please visit here. THE GUARDIAN (SCORE 4/5) 'Controversial player-packs and all, Fifa 23 is the culmination of EA Sports’ philosophy. This series has always talked about realism, but it was for many years a Roy of the Rovers-style of realism – a penalty in the dying seconds, a scissor kick goalline clearance, a 35-yard screamer bending through the air like a misfiring exocet missile. Now it feels like the physics, AI and animation have come together in a way that makes even these ridiculous moments feel naturalistic and pleasurable. The first Fifa on the Mega Drive billed itself as an authentic experience of real sport, real drama, real spectacle. It wasn’t then, but perhaps, in this final iteration … it is now.' EUROGAMER (SCORE N/A) 'More seriously, this sport at its best, and FIFA too, is group therapy. A kind of communal, primal decompression after staying late at work, a Tuesday afternoon with English followed by double Maths. FIFA 23, like all FIFAs, still captures this and still plays enabler to it, and I believe EA Sports' desire to do so is sincere. That's an admirable goal. It's just that with Ultimate Team, and the cost of it, the pompous marketing, the whiff of gouging exploitation and the vast, horrific spectre of gambling that looms over it all, it's a goal ruled out by the most egregious VAR. With the age of FIFA coming to an end - next year, EA Sports is going its own way, renaming the series EA Sports FC, while FIFA the organisation scrambles to do its own thing - FIFA 23's messy, conflicted, simultaneously brilliant and grotesque reflection of a brilliant, grotesque sport feels like a fitting end to the era.' Whether that is a full-on match, the futsal/streetball hybrid Volta, or the compulsive highlights mode, it plays like a dream. It looks like one too, the closest EA have come to delivering an actual HD sports broadcast. For the first time in a long time, I am once again looking forward to getting home from work and playing it, daydreaming about it whilst in the office, of my next 35-yard power screamer. I don’t care what they call it next year, if it improves on this then I will be there on day one.' For the full review please visit here. TFV GAMING (VIDEO REVIEW) Overall, FIFA 23 currently sits at a Metascore of 78 from 25 reviews. In contrast, its predecessor, FIFA 22, garnered a score of 78 from 67 reviews last year, signaling that maybe this new entry is a similar experience (I know...SHOCKER). Regardless, as stated above, this entry is special and an end of a long storied career. You deserve your retirement FIFA, we will miss you. -YOU MAY ALSO BE INTERESTED IN:
