Like the sport it's based on, FIFA games are more of obsession rather than just another sports game for many especially here in Jamaica. All of the major European Leagues have already begun of course, so virtual footy is sliding in at its traditional late September release date. A new FIFA brings with it the same old question, 'How is this year's version different from last year's?' Well, Electronic Arts tackled that question head on with the reveal of the new streetball mode, Volta but, was this mode the only real significant change to make this year's game stand out from its predecessors? Here's the review roundup:
SCREEN RANT 4/5
"All in all, FIFA 20 is a solid new addition to the long-running franchise. Some may miss novelties such as The Journey, but with a strong replacement in Volta mode and some somewhat significant updates to traditional gameplay it's hard not to see the overall scope of FIFA 20 as an improvement. Overall, there's enough changes for fans to feel that FIFA 20 worth it, even if it's not revolutionary." Click here for the full review. EUROGAMER "FIFA 20 is all these things but it's also better than FIFA 19. I've already played loads of games against Eurogamer's second-best FIFA player, Chris Tapsell, and I've had a great laugh. I've scored some screamers. I've lost to added time goals. We've leapt off the sofa at shocking refereeing decisions, missed open goals by Marcus Rashford and magic from Mason Mount. We've picked apart the game, worked out what's changed, what's better and what's worse. We've had bloody good fun. And it's all undermined by corporate greed and a stubborn refusal to do what's right. A bit like real football, then." Click here for the full review. IGN 7.8/10 "Volta is a significant addition to FIFA and while it doesn’t all hit the right notes, it’s a largely enjoyable way to play a wealth of content, including a story mode that’s more concise and engaging than The Journey. Elsewhere, improvements have been made to the core FIFA 20 experience, especially when it comes to defending, but overall controlling the ball feels less consistently fluid. For someone not attracted by the allure of Volta, the stilted pace, coupled with a neglect of offline modes such as Career, make it FIFA 20 an adequate but underwhelming entry into the series." THE TELEGRAPH 4/5
"It’s evident EA’s priorities lie elsewhere. The company has, perhaps justifiably, been accused of prioritising profits over gameplay but the emphasis has evidently now shifted to attention time. FIFA’s main competitor is now no longer football games, it’s free-to-play shooters. And that might prove to be the series’ toughest match up yet." Click here for the full review. VG247 4/5 "Without much cosmetic polish to fall back on, FIFA 20 needed to bring something new to the table. Although the core gameplay isn’t mind-blowingly different, it’s still the best football game, and the addition of VOLTA is a whole new way to play." Click here for the full review.
FIFA 20 currently has a Metascore of 83 from 13 reviews as many publications choose to withheld their finished reviews until to after the day of release to properly test the game's online features. My personal motto is to never buy FIFA games each year but instead bi-annually as I believed I would ensure there would be enough gameplay changes to justify a purchase. However, I will be the first to admit that playing Volta with friends come September 24 is so tempting.
