You will need to think long and hard for the last time DC animations produced a bad Batman film (many believe this to be 2018's Batman Ninja). They have an even better record when they are adapting from a critical acclaim comic book/graphic novel (looking at you 'Killing Joke'), so when we caught wind of a The Doom That Came To Gotham film was on its way, one can't help but be excited. But did it keep DC Animation's streak of great Batman films going? Or is this their first miss in years? Here's the review roundup: FLICKERING MYTH 'The animation style brings to mind Bruce Timm’s Batman: The Animated Series albeit with a bit of a modern edge, effectively capturing the original artwork of the comic in all its grotesque glory. Horrific scares, suspenseful thrills and Lovecraftian goodies are all-a-plenty in this latest DC animated Batman flick which brings Mike Mignola’s Hellboy-esque vision to life. In short, Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham is an Elseworlds entry you would not want to miss.' For the full review please visit here. MOVIE WEB (by JULIAN ROMAN) 'Several aspects of the story are handled with varying degrees of success. Known characters are revisited in an interesting way. You'll see a very different Oliver Queen and Barbara Gordon here. Additionally, the period setting and weaponry is unique — Batman's gadgets have old school flair but still get the job done. The primary issue with Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham concerns the actual detective work. There is none. Batman continually bumps into new villains that just happen to point him in the right direction. The script needed to be much sharper in this regard. We're spoonfed the plot.' CULTURED VULTURES (by Joey Rambles) 'At the end of the day, though, there are so many Batman adaptations that exist that it’s hard to feel any strong emotion for this one, be it positive or negative. Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham will please neither the comic book fans nor the newcomers and is bound to be forgotten in the vast sea of superhero movies we have today.' LYLES MOVIE FILES (by Jeffrey Lyles) 'The Doom That Came to Gotham really feels like a fresher Batman story. With its horror and mystery elements and the underlined detective story backed with creepy visuals and some clever twists on familiar Batman allies and foes, this is another example of why going the adapted route tends to work best for modern DC Animated films.' It avoids turning into a Hellboy story with the Bat family, nor does it melt into weird fiction halfway through. Instead, we get superb performances from David Giuntoli as Batman, and Tati Gabrielle is pretty much perfect as Kai Li Cain, one of Bruce’s wards. Jeffrey Combs is always a pleasure and nails the creepy vibe of this movie’s version of Kirk Langstrom. It’s brilliantly cast throughout. The Doom That Came To Gotham is exactly as weird, crazy and fun as its premise suggests, and if you’re a fan of all things animated Batman or just like weird horror, you should see this.' Admittedly, a tiny sample size, but an outstanding score nonetheless. The original "Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham" is a well-regarded series among fans of Batman and Lovecraftian horror, so the pressure was on for the animation studio to get this film right. So far, according to most critics, they have succeeded. -YOU MAY ALSO BE INTERESTED IN:
