When it comes to the animated film industry, Pixar and Dreamworks are considered the big dogs. But, thanks to the recent success of Spiderman: Into the Spidey Verse and The Mitchells vs. the Machines, Sony Animations is quickly building a reputation for the next animation house to produce sure-fire hits. Now, Vivo is next up to bat, but did Sony hit it out of the park? Here's the review roundup: NEW YORK POST 'Vivo” is a heartfelt piece with catchy songs and a much more cohesive plot than Miranda’s “Moana,” which gets tangled midway through. Sure it could do with a touch more depth, but in the kids movie genre, you could do a lot worse. I’m not always a fan of Miranda’s acting, yet something about a singing and dancing mini-mammal suits him perfectly. Well, better than a British chimney sweep in “Mary Poppins Returns” anyway.' ROGER EBERT 'All these characters do is insert chaos and serve as filler, and they make zero sense if “Vivo” is meant to be a race against the clock to get the song into Marta’s hands before she leaves the stage. Yes, yes, I know. The journey is the destination, and this one’s meant to be all about facing challenges and overcoming fears. It’s rather generic kids-movie stuff, thematically. But the closer the characters get to Miami, the less urgent their mission feels. And perhaps most frustrating of all, the tune that’s crucial to driving the narrative ends up being one of the weakest and most forgettable.' For the full review please visit here. CNN 'Animation provides Miranda -- who is also writing songs for Disney's upcoming "Encanto" -- and Hudes a colorful canvas to extend their collaboration, albeit at a scale that won't make anyone forget about "Hamilton." Still, by continuing to explore a medium that has a long musical history, Miranda's not throwing away his shots.' For the full review please visit here.
VARIETY 'Instead of inventing a new look for the entire film, DeMicco and his design team push certain sequences, most notably a run-in with a noise-averse python and the aforementioned “Mambo Cabana,” a 2D interlude in which fluorescent nightclub colors pop against pitch-black backgrounds. It’s Miranda’s Latin-centered music that gives the project much of its personality, but in scenes like these, the visuals really sing and “Vivo” truly comes alive.' INDEPENDENT 'Continuing Sony Animation’s trend of incorporating 2D animation – following on from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and The Mitchells vs the Machines – several sequences play gorgeously off the shapes and colours of Fifties travel posters. If the pure joy of Vivo is anything to go by, Miranda’s hardly outstayed his welcome.' For the full review please visit here. FILM STOCKED (VIDEO REVIEW) In the end, the film amassed a critical score of 87% from 79 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. It's no Spider-Man, but from these reviews, Vivo looks like another fine film from Sony's house of animation. -YOU MAY ALSO BE INTERESTED IN:
