When examining the Angry Birds brand today, it is easy to forget just how far the franchise had come. It is incredible to think about its small humble beginnings as a mobile game to its meteoric rise as a mega pop-cultural powerhouse, it is today. The term 'Angry Birds' is so deeply rooted in modern society that even your grandparents probably know what it is about. The brand officially established itself in pop culture with the Angry Birds animated movie that actually surprises many with its quality. So much so that we are now only a few short days away from a sequel but, is it a surprise hit like the first? Here's the review roundup: VARIETY "One such sequence, involving a rickety eagle costume, a urinal and an increasingly perplexed security guard, that may just be funnier than any scene from a Hollywood studio comedy in the last year. That alone is a pretty surprising takeaway from a project that, on paper, has scarcely any reason to exist: Some way past the zenith of the Angry Birds craze, the fun has somehow outlasted the games." THE GUARDIAN 3/5 "As in its predecessor, a lot gets thrown at the screen – Nicki Minaj is the 19th-billed voice artist – and not everything zings: there are some (perhaps knowingly) lame references to dabbing and “resting bird face”. Yet this is one sequel you can’t fault for effort, and the dud jokes are far outnumbered by the ones that are just about cute, smart or screwy enough to nudge out a laugh." SCREEN RANT "Its plot is pretty lean even by kids movie standards, and there are more pop culture references and needle drops of modern pop songs and classic tunes than you can shake a stick at, but The Angry Birds Movie 2 is still somewhat shockingly fun. Those who skipped the first movie can feel comfortable about ignoring the followup too (it's not that good), but anyone with a passing interest in another Angry Birds adventure may find its ridiculousness offers a welcome break from their everyday lives." IGN 6/10 "The Angry Birds Movie 2 does what you’d expect it to do, some nice touches move the franchise forward, but it could have dug deeper as some other franchises have. The whole is less than the sum of its parts, but those parts just about make the grade. Kids or a certain age will love it, and ultimately that’s all that really matters here." EMPIRE 3/5 "Unlike the first film’s dubious-for-a-kids’ film messaging — be wary of foreign strangers; it’s okay to get angry sometimes — the second film stays on safer ground, deconstructing gung-ho macho heroics (Red comes to agree Silver is the brains of the outfit) and persuasively arguing things are always better when we work together. Moving beyond the confines of the app’s premises, The Angry Birds Movie 2 starts slow but flourishes into breezy, colourful fun." For the full review you can click here. Overall The Angry Birds Movie 2 currently sits at a 73% from 51 critic reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. According to most of these reviews, this sequel failed to match the quality of the first movie but contains many funny and great moments for you to enjoy. The movie releases this week (August 14 & 15) locally here in Jamaica with a 2.40pm 3D showing at the Cineplex followed by later showings at Carib 5, Multiplex and Sunshine movie theatres respectively.
