All dads are fathers...but not all fathers are dads! My grandfather often said that line to me when I was younger, and I never quite understood what he meant until my own son was born recently. Father's day is here, and honestly speaking, the day had always felt lost in the shadows of the juggernaut Mother's Day. It is like comparing Christmas with Kwanzaa, both equally important, but only one people truly care about. Well, I say...SCREW THAT! Dads, I am here to help raise Father's day profile the only way I know how...by creating a hot office debate amongst us here in the studio on the greatest cartoon dads in history. Here's what we came up with: homer simpsonSure he is fat, lazy, dumb, addicted to beer and strangles his son a little too much for this politically correct world (all of this could describe my own father, infact), but Homer has shown throughout the many years of The Simpsons time on tv that he is also a sweet, loving and caring father. He has never let down Lisa, Maggie and Bart (maybe Bart) when they needed him the most, and that is the bare minimum for one to be considered a great dad. LYNN LOUD SNRHey, I am just as surprised as you are. While I am still a lover of cartoons and watch my fair share of modern ones, I never expected a cartoon dad from this era to crack this list. But a very compelling argument was drafted for Mr Loud, with many believing any Father that manages such a large household of women deserves a special prize. Who can argue against that? Hugh NeutronOf course we had to include the cool duck king himself. Hugh Neutron may had been the father of boy genius Jimmy Neutron, but it was clear from episode one he didn't pass down any genius genes. While calling him intellectually challenge may be a step too far, he's more on the lovable goof side who always shown interest in his son's many inventions despite his own lack of understanding science.
goofySpeaking of Goofballs, here comes the champ! Yes, believe it or not, Goofy is indeed a dad and such a good one we, just had to have him on this list. Goofy the father is something you would never ever imagine when you see this lovable doofus in action when hanging with Mickey and Co. However, that all changed with the absolutely fantastic film A Goofy Movie. He showed us nowadays dads the right way of parenting a teenager in his own goofy way. RANDY MARSHHey, we never said this list was only about those who are great role models, did we? Yep, rounding off this carefully chosen motley crew of cartoon dads is Randy Marsh from South Park. Randy is an interesting case in the earlier seasons of the show, he was often portrayed as a calm, level-headed geologist, but by the end of last season, he is basically an absent-minded idiot, driving many episode plots. However, he was always there to give his children advice, even if it was often terrible. And there you have it...our top 5 favourite Cartoon dads...a list that could have easily been a top 50. The likes of Dexter Dad from Dexter Laboratory, Timmy Turner's Dad, Stan Smith from American Dad and a host of others are deserving of at least an honourable mention. I hope we succeeded (even if it's for a second) in putting Father's day on equal footing with Mother's day. -YOU MAY ALSO BE INTERESTED IN:
