The Summer is the perfect time for lengthy, enjoyably RPGs and even though the Switch received two great ones last month(Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 & Fire Emblem: 3 Houses), there is still enough time for one more before September. Next in line is the new Action-RPG, ONINAKI, that tells the story of one Watcher on a journey to protect Life, after Death. The game features exciting hack and slash style battles, with deep customization of your demons and weapons. So is it another great RPG releasing this Summer? Here's the review roundup: KOTAKU "Ultimately, Oninaki comes out of the gate promising, but it doesn’t truly capitalize on its dark themes or religious introspection. The ultimate truths revealed about Oninaki’s world and characters were never enough to really make me feel like cutting through enemy after enemy after enemy was worth it. It’s unfortunate—there are a lot of genuinely cool ideas here, but none of them really makes the game special." For the full review please click here. DESTRUCTOID 6.5/10 "I'm emotionally torn on Oninaki because there's so much to like here: it has a lot of great ideas, it just doesn't execute them all as well as it should. Maybe Tokyo RPG Factory should look at changing their formula and scaling down to tighter 10 hour adventures. By cutting down the scale they can focus on what they do best." Many JRPGs have that heart, the same one that mellows you even to their most ridiculous qualities. Oninaki, on the other hand, comes across as loveless." For the full review please click here. SCREEN RANT 4.5/5 "Between an engrossing narrative and diverse, exciting combat, Oninaki is likely Tokyo RPG Factory's best game yet. For JRPG fans, it's a must-play, but for those unsure about how interested they are in the genre, it's also a wonderful choice to sample and see if Oninaki is to their liking." NINNTENDO LIFE 7/10 "There’s a clear maturation in the work of Tokyo RPG Factory from game to game, as it sticks closely to its traditional ideals while slowly widening the scope of its ambitions. Bearing this in mind, Oninaki is certainly the biggest and most innovative release from the studio yet, but we wouldn’t exactly call it the best. We’d give Oninaki a recommendation to anybody who loves RPGs; although it isn’t the best, this is another solid showing from Tokyo RPG Factory." For the full review please click here. Oninaki currently sits at 77 on Metacritic for the Switch and 69 for the PS4 version which backs up the view that the game is good, but has room for improvement. You can try the game for yourself right now via a playable demo that's available on the eshop and PSN. For more on gaming check out our highlights from Gamescom 2019.
