After only 6 days since its last big release, Nintendo is launching another in the form of Fire Emblem: Three Houses. The game is the first console Fire Emblem since 2007 and with it comes huge expectations from its loyal fans. So were those expectations met? Naturally, we would have to wait for some time after launch day get our answer but, we do get a general idea of its quality thanks to critic reviews. Here's the roundup: GAMESRADAR 5/5 "After playing through 45 hours of Fire Emblem: Three Houses I'm already prepared to start another file to see how the story differs with the other houses. Fire Emblem: Three Houses fully realizes a new, meaningful direction for the franchise that makes it the best it has ever been." For the full review click here. DESTRUCTOID 9.5/10 "I cannot stress enough how much Fire Emblem: Three Houses exemplifies the "RPG" part of the acronym "SRPG." While strategy is indubitably a large part of Fire Emblem's DNA, the vast majority of my enjoyment was found having lunch with classmates and getting to know them better, or doing errands while running around the lovely academy grounds. This is a world you can absolutely lose yourself to for months on end, but if you find menus tedious, you might be reticent to the modern relationship-heavy Fire Emblem formula that's cemented in Three Houses." Its tense battles are made all the more harrowing thanks to new strategy elements, and the colorful cast of troops you send into the fray are incredibly charming. With a new take on training and bonding with your units, and the many activities and options available to sample, it’s absolutely begging to be played multiple times." For the full review click here. GAMESPOT 9/10 "A second playthrough treads familiar ground in the beginning, but after learning and growing so much in the first, it feels fresh, too. That speaks to Three Houses' mechanical complexity and depth as well as the connections it fosters with its characters--and whether you're managing inventories or battlefields, it's the kind of game that's hard to put down, even when it's over." But for all its emphasis on player choice, I could never shake the feeling that I chose wrong due to the way my story played out. In reinventing Fire Emblem for a new console generation, Three Houses doubles down on its philosophy of player choice, but neglects to make all choices equally valid. If commercial success follows, it will further cement the series as one of Nintendo's major IPs. A far cry from the days when it was on life support. Fire Emblem: Three Houses releases tomorrow (July 26) exclusive for the Nintendo Switch. For more gaming review roundups check out Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 and Dragon Quest Builders 2.
