Just a few days after another high profile anime movie was coming to the west, Funimation announced today that they have acquired the rights to the 14th movie in the popular ONE PIECE series, ONE PIECE STAMPEDE and will be releasing it in North American cinemas. Stampede is was released in Japan on August 9, 2019, and is meant to mark the anime's 20th anniversary.
“We are so excited to bring 'One Piece: Stampede’ to North America as part of our 20th anniversary celebration of this beloved anime series. It’s a blockbuster film that will delight new audiences and long-time fans alike,” said Funimation's executive vice president and general manager Colin Decker in a statement.
“’One Piece: Stampede’ is a bold celebration of One Piece and its unique blend of action, humor and heart,” said Masayuki Endo, President and CEO of Toei Animation Inc. “Even among those who are new to the anime, Monkey D. Luffy and his crew are instantly recognizable pop culture stars. ‘One Piece: Stampede’ has plenty of surprises for every viewer, and we’re excited for North American audiences to participate in this important anniversary event.”
Funimation also holds the distribution rights for the anime tv series but did not disclose whether they will be releasing a dub or sub version (or both) of the movie for the North American audiences. A release date was also absent from their announcement.
As mention in my previous post about the Human Lost movie, these anime movies rarely make an appearance here in Jamaican theatres but with 'anime culture' becoming more and more mainstream and ONE PIECE'S huge following, here's hoping Palace Amusement will also give it a chance here.
