Minecraft was more than just a game but a phenomenon when it launched over a decade ago. It became the unstoppable Juggernaut in the sandbox genre with little to no rival to their throne. However, Square Enix has not given up and took another crack with Dragon Quest Builders 2. However, before DQB2 has any chance of matching Minecraft commercially it may have to first stack up critically. Here is the review roundup: IGN 8.8/10 'Dragon Quest Builders 2 is an admirable RPG and an admirable building game which seems in most cases to have gotten the best bits of both of its parent genres. Clunky, overly straightforward combat and unintuitive controls drag it down a little bit, but it still manages to soar above all of the less ambitious Minecraft clones we’ve seen over the years.' The groundwork laid by the first title is still sound, but it just didn't grab me the same way its predecessor did. That doesn't mean I'm going to stop playing anytime soon -- I still have my home island to complete -- but it does mean it's not going to get my undivided attention for weeks-on-end like the first game did.' NINTENDO WORLD REPORT 9.5/10 'Dragon Quest Builders 2 features solid controls, attractive presentation, online multiplayer and limitless charm, but these don’t tell the whole story. Each element of the experience on its own would be less than impressive, but like a pile of wood, bricks, mortar, and steel before its shaped by human hands, the sum of its parts culminate in an impressive and memorable architecture.' NINTENDO LIFE 8/10 'It takes a surprising amount of effort to beat Minecraft at its own game, but we’d argue that Dragon Quest Builders 2 in many ways surpasses its inspiration in fun factor and replayability. The melding of JRPG conventions with the open-ended and creatively focused sentiments of sandbox gameplay proves to go over much smoother than you’d expect, especially now that Square Enix seems to know what it’s doing with this sub-series.' GAMEXPLAIN (VIDEO REVIEW) Dragon Quest Builders 2 may obviously draw comparison to Mineraft, but it seems the folks at Square Enix had done just enough create its own identity. Looking at these reviews and metric (the game sits at 86% for both the Nintendo Switch and PS4) the game has done well critically. Now the hope is, it will do well commercially.
