this is not a drill! Nickelodeon is launching a new avatar animation studio

After news broke that Netflix would be teaming up with the original creators of Avatar the Last Air Bender to create a live-action series for the streaming platform, we were cautiously optimistic. Since then, the creators left the project over "creative differences", and our collective hopes for great new content in the world of Avatar was again dashed. In step Nickelodeon to our rescue with the recent announcement of Avatar Studios.  

Avatar Studio is a brand new animation division dedicated to creating new movies and series in the world of Avatar: The Last Air Bender and The Legend of Korra. The division will be called Avatar Studios and will be led by original creators and executive producers Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, with their first project being a brand spanking new animated theatrical film. Everything else will debut on Paramount+, Nickelodeon platforms, and unspecified third-party platforms, as well as in cinemas.

​“It’s hard to believe it’s been 19 years since we created Avatar: The Last Airbender,” said Konietzko and DiMartino in a joint statement released alongside the announcement. “But even after all that time, there are still many stories and time periods in Aang’s world that we are eager to bring to life. We are fortunate to have an ever-growing community of passionate fans that enjoys exploring the Avatarverse as much as we do.”

“We’re excited to be back at Nickelodeon where Avatar began, doing what we do best in the biggest way possible. We can’t wait to build the great teams and productions to make all of this fantasy a reality.”

​This is such exciting news and a real surprise to see after Nickelodeon treatment of the last two seasons of The Legend of Korra. Now, it will be really interesting to see how Netflix's live-action series turns out.
