Most fans of animated films would agree that 2018 had a stellar year of releases with Incredibles 2, Ralph Breaks the Internet and the Academy Awards favourite Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse the Crème de la crème. Now it is 2019's turn and it already had an explosive opening thanks to the well reviewed Dragon Ball Super: Broly movie in January. Can the rest of 2019 keep pace? And what will be this year's surpise similar to Spider-Man? Here are the animated films we regard as the most anticipated:
*Note these are based on the American release date THE LEGO MOVIE 2 (FEBRUARY 8, 2019)
The first major animated film set for release after the Broly movie is THE LEGO MOVIE 2. Being a squeal to the surprising hit The LEGO MOVIE, LEGO 2 hopes to once again whisk away audiences on another funny and colourful adventure in the land of LEGOS.
HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON: THE HIDDEN WORLD (FEBRUARY 22)
It seems 2019 is going to be the year of the sequels as Dreamwork's third film in the trilogy is looking to end Hiccup and Toothless story on a epic high.
SPIES IN DISGUISE (SEPTEMBER 2019)
Tired of sequels? well here is a fresh original IP from Blue Sky Studios. Spies in Disguise is about the world's greatest super spy, Lance Sterling, saving the world and the day disguise as a pigeon. Will Smith, Tom Holland and *shouting voice* DJ Khaled all lend their voices to the film.
TOY STORY 4 (JUNE 21)
We thought we saw the end of Woody's and Buzz's story back 2010 with Toy Story 3 but here we are, nine years later getting ready for another entry in series. The cast promises this is the end (at least to Andy's story) and to expect to laugh, and to shed major tears this time around.
FROZEN 2 (NOVEMBER 27)
The first Frozen was such monumental success back in 2013 that Disney just couldn't let it go (hehe) without adding more to the series. 2 more animated shorts were eventually released but 2019 is finally the year we are getting a part 2.
SHREK 5/SHREK REBOOT (2019?)
Ok we admit this last one is a bit of a stretch as there has been no official announcement or confirmation Dreamworks but their rumors of a Shrek reboot in development that just wont go away. Here's hoping if it's real it's better than Shrek: Forever After.
