Can you smell it?... That smell of gold dust in the air? Yes, it's finally Oscar season, and while we enjoy the numerous end-of-year awards from the various popular publications throughout the industry (including our own), this is, of course, the one that truly means something. ENCANTO and THE WINDSHIELD WIPER took home the little golden statue last year for their respective fields, but who's coming out on top this year? Here are the nominees: 2023 ANIMATED FEATURE FILM nomineesGUILLERMO DEL TORO'S PINOCCHIO Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro reinvents the classic story of a wooden puppet brought to life in this stunning stop-motion musical tale. People are sometimes afraid of what they don’t know… From the mind of Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and award-winning stop-motion legend Mark Gustafson, GUILLERMO DEL TORO'S PINOCCHIO is a story you think you may know… but you don’t TURNING RED Disney and Pixar’s “Turning Red” introduces Mei Lee (voice of Rosalie Chiang), a confident, dorky 13-year-old torn between staying her mother’s dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence. Her protective, if not slightly overbearing mother, Ming (voice of Sandra Oh), is never far from her daughter—an unfortunate reality for the teenager. And as if changes to her interests, relationships and body weren’t enough, whenever she gets too excited (which is practically ALWAYS), she “poofs” into a giant red panda! PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH Academy Award® nominee Antonio Banderas returns as the voice of the notorious PiB as he embarks on an epic journey into the Black Forest to find the mythical Wishing Star and restore his lost lives. But with only one life left, Puss will have to humble himself and ask for help from his former partner and nemesis: the captivating Kitty Softpaws (Oscar® nominee Salma Hayek Pinault).
THE SEA BEAST From Academy Award winning filmmaker Chris Williams (Moana, Big Hero Six), THE SEA BEAST takes us to where the map ends, and the true adventure begins. Starring Karl Urban, Zaris-Angel Hator, Jared Harris, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Dan Stevens and Kathy Burke. In an era when terrifying beasts roamed the seas, monster hunters were celebrated heroes - and none were more beloved than the great Jacob Holland. But when young Maisie Brumble stows away on his fabled ship, he’s saddled with an unexpected ally. Together they embark on an epic journey into uncharted waters and make history. MARCEL THE SHELL WITH SHOES ON Marcel is an adorable one-inch-tall shell who ekes out a colorful existence with his grandmother Connie and their pet lint, Alan. Once part of a sprawling community of shells, they now live alone as the sole survivors of a mysterious tragedy. But when a documentary filmmaker discovers them amongst the clutter of his Airbnb, the short film he posts online brings Marcel millions of passionate fans, as well as unprecedented dangers and a new hope at finding his long-lost family.
2023 SHORT FILM (ANIMATED) nomineesTHE BOY, THE MOLE, THE FOX AND THE HORSE Charlie Mackesy and Matthew Freud THE FLYING SAILOR Amanda Forbis and Wendy Tilby ICE MERCHANTS João Gonzalez and Bruno Caetano MY YEAR OF DICKS Sara Gunnarsdóttir and Pamela Ribon AN OSTRICH TOLD ME THE WORLD IS FAKE AND I THINK I BELIEVE IT Lachlan Pendragon Encanto was such an easy pick at last year's Academy Awards, but I must admit, I can see either PINOCCHIO or Puss in the Boots taking home the gold this time around. The grand winners will be announced at THE 95TH ACADEMY AWARDS Sunday, March 12, 2023. -YOU MAY ALSO BE INTERESTED IN
